Historic Rankings Shift as Djokovic Falls Outside Top 10

For the first time in nearly 24 years, the ATP top 10 contains none of tennis's legendary "Big Three." Novak Djokovic has dropped to No. 12 in Monday's updated rankings—the first time since October 2002 that neither Djokovic, Roger Federer, nor Rafael Nadal appears in the top 10. The Serbian legend, who has spent over 400 weeks at world No. 1 during his career, saw his ranking slide accelerate following another disappointing Grand Slam season. The shift marks an unmistakable changing of the guard in men's tennis, as the generation led by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz—along with newly crowned US Open champion Alexander Zverev—firmly takes control of the sport's upper echelon.

Meanwhile, Sinner has made a strategic decision that could preserve his hold on the No. 1 ranking as the season enters its final stretch. Despite missing recent tournaments since the Wimbledon final, the Italian has committed to upcoming events that should protect his position atop the rankings from challengers like Zverev, who surged with his US Open triumph and Roland Garros title earlier this year. Boris Becker, analyzing Zverev's breakthrough season, suggested the German is now the leading contender for another ATP award—likely Player of the Year—after compiling a 25-2 Grand Slam record and two major titles in 2026.

Tension is also mounting off the court. Carlos Alcaraz has issued a stark warning to the ATP as player frustration over the tour's scheduling continues to build. The criticism, echoing concerns raised throughout the season, comes as top players increasingly push back against what many view as an unsustainable calendar that prioritizes commercial expansion over player welfare. In the ATP's next generation race, Rafael Jodar maintains his lead for the Next Gen Finals, with Rei Sakamoto surging to fourth after his first main-draw US Open win.
